Our Commitment

A thoughtful approach to what we make

Made with purpose.
Made to matter.

Our commitment begins long before a finished piece leaves the studio.

I've always believed that if you're going to create something, you should care about more than just the finished product. You should care about the materials you're using, where they come from, how they're handled, and what happens to them along the way.

Working with leather for more than a decade has given me an incredible appreciation for the material itself, but it's also made me much more aware of the responsibility that comes with using natural resources.

Respecting the material

“Using materials thoughtfully, minimizing unnecessary waste, and creating products intended for long-term use are meaningful choices.”

Leather is a byproduct of the meat industry, and I believe there's value in taking a material that might otherwise go to waste and turning it into something useful that can be enjoyed for years. That doesn't mean leather production is without environmental impact, and I would never pretend otherwise. But I do believe that using materials thoughtfully, minimizing unnecessary waste, and creating products intended for long-term use are meaningful choices.

One of the things I've learned over the years is that there is an enormous amount of variation from one hide to another. There are natural markings, differences in texture, and areas that may not be suitable for one product but are perfectly usable for another. Rather than treating every imperfection as something to discard, we look for opportunities to make the most of what we have.

Sometimes that means adjusting a pattern or finding a different use for a smaller piece of leather. Sometimes it means setting materials aside until the right project comes along. It's not always the fastest or easiest approach, but I think it's worth the effort.

Less, but better

Pieces worth keeping. Materials worth respecting.

I'm also a big believer in buying fewer things that are made well rather than constantly replacing things that weren't designed to last. A good leather product can develop character over time, and with proper care, many can remain useful for years. There's something wonderful about owning something that gets better with age instead of being discarded when the next trend comes along.

As Berit Brooks has grown beyond leather goods into engraving, personalization, and other creative work, that same mindset has continued to influence how we approach our projects. We consider how materials will be used, how products can serve a practical purpose, and whether what we're creating is something people will genuinely want to keep.

I also think it's important to acknowledge that we're a small business, and we're still learning. We don't have every answer, and I'm not going to tell you that everything we make is perfectly sustainable or that every decision we make is the most environmentally friendly one possible. What I can tell you is that we care, we pay attention, and we're always looking for ways to do better.

For me, this commitment isn't about earning a label or making a marketing claim. It's about respecting the materials we're fortunate enough to work with, being intentional about what we create, and running a business that reflects the values I want associated with our family's name.

That's something I take seriously, and something I intend to keep building on as Berit Brooks grows.
